Background of the Study

In crisis situations, such as natural disasters, political unrest, or public health emergencies, live broadcasts serve as a crucial tool for disseminating information to the public. These broadcasts provide real-time updates, convey emergency instructions, and offer a platform for affected communities to voice their concerns. However, the immediacy and unedited nature of live broadcasts introduce several ethical challenges for journalists. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, live reporting of crises has become increasingly common, yet it raises issues such as sensationalism, misinformation, and the violation of privacy. Ethical concerns include balancing the need to inform the public with the responsibility to protect vulnerable individuals, avoid panic, and prevent harm. This study explores the ethical challenges journalists face when conducting live broadcasts in crisis situations in Lafia, focusing on the dilemmas of accuracy, privacy, and public safety (Musa & Bello, 2024; Ibrahim, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Live broadcasts in crisis situations, while beneficial for delivering real-time information, also present significant ethical challenges. Journalists are often faced with the dilemma of reporting sensitive information without causing undue harm to victims or exacerbating the crisis. In Lafia, there have been instances where live broadcasts have led to the spread of unverified information, compromised privacy, or heightened public fear. These ethical challenges complicate the work of journalists, who must navigate the pressures of delivering urgent news while adhering to professional standards. This study seeks to address the gap in understanding these ethical dilemmas in the context of Lafia Local Government Area (Abubakar & Suleiman, 2024; Okoro & Ibrahim, 2023).

  3. To propose strategies for improving ethical standards in live broadcasts during crises.

This study is significant as it provides a deeper understanding of the ethical dilemmas faced by journalists in Lafia during live broadcasts of crises. The findings will be valuable for media practitioners, policymakers, and journalism training institutions, helping to develop better guidelines and standards for live crisis reporting. Enhancing ethical practices in this area will improve the quality of crisis communication and protect the public interest.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the ethical challenges of live broadcasts during crises in Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. It is limited to the assessment of journalistic practices during live reporting of various crises.
